Jyotica Tangri has all the right reasons to be happy as she received the Best Playback Singer award at the Zee Cine Awards 2018. Her debut song Pallo Latke from Rajkummar Rao and Kriti Kharbanda starrer Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana garnered a lot of appreciation and it has also helped Jyotica to get recognition in the industry.
Her recent work was in the multi starrer film, Fukrey Returns where she crooned Ishq De Fanniyar. The song reminded us of the hit song, Ambarsariya from its first part. Recently, Koimoi.com caught up with the singer through an email interview where she told us about her next projects, her journey so far, her most favourite actress Deepika Padukone and much more!
Excerpts from the interview:
1. First of all congratulations for winning the best playback award for Pallo Latke. How is the feeling for getting recognized for your debut song?
Thank you so much for your wishes, Pallo latke has been a turning point in my career. Whenever I record a new song I wish that the audience loves it and it becomes a hit and so was the case with Pallo Latke. But I never thought that in less than two months it will cross more than 45 million views. Being nominated for Zee cine Awards and bagging the award for best playback singer seemed like a fairy-tale to me. I am so glad to have sung this song and I would like to thank Zee Music Company for this opportunity.
2. How has the journey been so far, you have come a long way?
It has been a crazy journey from Jalandhar to Mumbai (the city of dreams). I started learning music from the age of 6 from Guruji Sh. Dharminder Kathak ji and I am trained in Hindustani Classical music. I have been really fortunate to have the support of my family. It was my mother’s (Bhawana Tangri) decision to send me to Mumbai in 2015 after being a part of a singing reality show called The Voice and I would like to add that Mika Singh (Mika bhaji) has been very supportive during my initial days in Mumbai. I love Mumbai and I just love the way it has embraced and accepted me.
3. How has life changed after entering the Bollywood industry?
It was my dream to work in the Bollywood industry and I always wanted to be a playback singer. I had no idea that it will happen so soon. I am really happy that my life has changed a lot. I have so many well-wishers and followers who send me their best wishes and encourage me to do better. My family is so proud, I am getting more opportunities to work and collaborate with amazing artists. I’m also travelling the world doing concerts and shows, all of this is amazing.
4. Your recent song was Ishq De Fanniyar. How was the experience of collaborating with such a hit franchise, Fukrey?
Ishq De Fanniyar is very close to my heart. It is a very beautiful melody by Toshi-Shaarib and it was an awesome feeling to collaborate with the Fukrey franchise. I feel really lucky that I am considered as a versatile singer as each song I sing is so different from the other. I got to sing Pallo Latke which is a club (feeling) song whereas Ishq De Fanniyar is a romantic melody.
5. What are your thoughts on the current music scenario of Bollywood?
I feel that current Bollywood music scenario is great for new singers because so many singers are getting opportunities to sing and music producers are willing to experiment with different tones and voices. There is a vast range of different genres of music being introduced in Bollywood which is phenomenal.
6. Which actress in the industry would you lend your voice to or you would love to sing for?
I would love to sing for Deepika Padukone. She is my personal favourite and it would be a pleasure to lend my voice to her.
7. What kind of genre interests you the most?
Folk interests me the most. I have been listening and singing folk songs since childhood. My Guruji made me sing different folks and this is how I learned to sing in 21 different languages.
8. Any plans to come up with singles in the near future?
Yes! Next month I have two singles releasing, one with Times Music and the other is collaboration with Raghav Sachar under Zee Music Company.
9. In the industry, who do you consider as your inspiration or you look up to?
There is list of people in the industry who have inspired me, one of them is Asha Bhosle Ji. Arijit Singh is also an inspiration and I also said in one of the singing reality shows that I want to be India’s first female Mika Singh because he has his own tone of singing which differentiates him from everyone. The way he has sustained in the industry giving hits on hits really inspires me.
10. What’s next on the platter?
I have been recording a lot of songs recently and I am expecting a number of releases in Bollywood as well as my independent music this year and I will be travelling for my shows too.
